There’s something magical about visiting cities and towns that have hosted the Olympic Games, even years after the historic competitions have taken place. Whether it’s a chance to admire mountain vistas and ski slopes where history was made and records were broken or an opportunity to dine in a trendy restaurant known for hosting some of the most famous Olympic athletes, there’s plenty of inspiration and high-energy fun.
People love the Olympics for so many diverse reasons…the Games provide a global sense of unity and pride and a celebration of human potential. It’s easy to be inspired by stories of athletes who overcame adversity and join in the thrill of victory or reflect on the agony of defeat.
Whether you have been mesmerized by the Winter XXV Olympic Games taking place in Milano Cortina, or you want to plan a unique vacation this spring, summer or fall, consider chartering a luxury motorcoach with a private driver so you can “go for the gold” in terms of an exceptional, customized travel experience that prioritizes comfort, style and convenience.

Olympics Bring Prestige to Host Towns and Cities
Many people don’t realize that it can take up to 11 years for a city or town to be chosen to host the Olympics. The International Olympic Committee (IOC) selects host cities through a flexible, dialogue-based process managed by Future Host Commissions. Rather than traditional rigid bidding, the IOC focuses on sustainability, using existing venues, and aligning with city development goals.
After candidates are chosen, the Olympic host selection process is managed by two permanent Future Host Commissions—one dedicated to the Summer Games and another to the Winter Games—comprising IOC Members and stakeholders from the Olympic Movement. These commissions propose potential hosts to the IOC Executive Board.
It’s quite prestigious to be chosen to host the Olympics, and many host cities and towns continue to thrive long after the Games are done. Here are three iconic U.S. Olympic destinations worth visiting in a luxury motorcoach rental.
Salt Lake City, Utah – Host of the 2002 Winter Olympics and Upcoming 2034 Summer Olympics

There were many spectacular memories made at the 2002 Winter Olympics in Salt Lake City, Utah. The U.S. won a record 34 medals. Kelly Clark won the first snowboarding gold medal for the U.S. It was the first debut of the women’s bobsleigh, and bobsledder Vonetta Flowers became the first African American and the first Black athlete from any country to win a gold medal at a Winter Olympics. The opening ceremony was also memorable, featuring an American flag that flew at the World Trade Center on 9/11, creating an emotional, poignant moment.

Salt Lake City was also selected to host the 2034 Winter Olympics due to its “living legacy” of well-maintained 2002 venues, strong public/political support, and proximity to mountain resorts.
Known by its slogan, “West of Conventional,” Salt Lake City offers stunning natural beauty, abundant outdoor recreation and a vibrant urban scene with diverse food, nightlife, and arts, all set against the backdrop of the Wasatch Mountains. The city is also famous for its strong Mormon heritage centered around Temple Square and its world-class genealogy research.
The Great Salt Lake is the largest natural lake west of the Mississippi River and the largest saltwater lake in the western hemisphere. Utah has two state parks close to the Salt Lake valley that offer a chance to explore this unique area. Great Salt Lake State Park and Antelope Island State Park.
No matter what time of year you visit, be sure to carve out plenty of time for a fun, immersive outing at one of the Olympic park venues. The Utah Olympic Park continues to be a major training site for current and prospective Olympians, but guests can participate in many exhilarating activities such as the Comet Bobsled Ride, a professionally piloted bobsled that reaches speeds up to 60 miles per hour. In the summer, the bobsleds are modified with wheels and travel down a concrete track. There’s also the less extreme Alpine Slide, where you get to control the speed. The Extreme Zipline is one of the steepest in the world, giving you a taste of what Olympic Nordic ski jumpers feel as they soar through the air. You can also go ice skating, try curling, take a scenic chairlift ride, tour the Olympic museums and participate in other fun activities.
Our LiTRV concierge specialist can check availability at nearby luxury RV resorts, including Mountain Valley RV Resort, in Heber City, about 45 minutes from Salt Lake City. This new, pet-friendly resort is surrounded by the famous Rocky Mountains with breathtaking views of Mount Timpanogos. The resort’s high-end amenities include two pools, two hot tubs and a spa, a basketball court, three pickleball courts, two dog parks. The spacious clubhouse includes a conference room, an indoor and outdoor fireplace, a kitchen, exercise room, and a large foyer with a large screen TV and pool table.
Los Angeles, California – Host of the 1932, 1984 and Upcoming 2028 Summer Olympics

Los Angeles has been called many things…the City of Angels, Tinseltown, La-La-Land, and the Entertainment Capital of the World. With an estimated 3.88 million residents living within the city limits, it is the second-most populous city in the United States, behind New York City.
Los Angeles is also a huge sports market, boasting 12 major league professional sports teams across the “Big Four” leagues and top-tier soccer. These teams include two NFL, two NBA, two MLB, two NHL, two MLS, and two WNBA/NWSL franchises. The city’s existing, extensive sports infrastructure was a key reason why Los Angeles was selected to host the upcoming 2028 Summer Olympic Games.
The Los Angeles Memorial Coliseum stands as a testament to the grandeur of the Games. A visit to the LA84 Foundation/John C. Argue Swim Stadium, originally constructed for the 1932 Games, reveals a beautifully preserved site where swimming and diving events once captivated the world. Griffith Park, home to the 1984 Olympic Equestrian events, offers expansive trails and scenic beauty, perfect for both equestrian enthusiasts and hikers.
In addition to exploring L.A.’s Olympic history, the city is a melting pot of cultures, offering a rich mix of food, art, and festivals. From hiking in the Santa Monica Mountains to surfing in Malibu, there’s plenty to do. As an entertainment hub, you can visit Universal Studios, the Walk of Fame, and you may even catch a glimpse of your favorite celebrity!

Our LiTRV concierge specialist can check availability at nearby RV parks, such as Hollywood RV Park, or we can arrange for you to stay a few nights in a five-star resort and spa, such as The Beverly Hills Hotel on Sunset Boulevard or Terranea, the exclusive oceanfront luxury resort in Rancho Palos Verde, about 45 minutes from Los Angeles. Our LiTRV private driver will drop you off at the resort and then pick you up when you are ready to continue your journey.
Depending on how much time you have, our LiTRV concierge specialist can also customize your itinerary so you can enjoy the full California experience, with several nights in coastal towns, such as Santa Barbara or Laguna Beach, a visit to the nearby wine region of Temecula Valley, or a visit to the posh city of Palm Springs.
Lake Placid, New York – Host of the 1932 and 1980 Winter Olympics

Lake Placid is a charming village nestled in the Adirondack Mountains in the northeastern part of New York, in Essex County. It was the first U.S. host town to bring the Winter Games to North America in 1932 and later hosted the Winter Games in 1980.
Lake Placid is also known in the sports world for the iconic moment, “The Miracle on Ice,” when the underdog U.S. hockey team, made up of college players, won the semi-final event after defeating the four-time defending, gold medal-winning Soviet team, and then later went on to take home the gold.
In addition to enjoying the serene natural beauty of the area, you’ll want to spend time exploring the Lake Placid Olympic Museum, which is home to North America’s second-largest Winter Olympic artifact collection. Or take the Legacy Tour at Mt. Van Hoevenberg Olympic Sports Complex, which continues to be a training and competition venue.
When the weather is warmer, you can enjoy outdoor activities, such as whitewater rafting, paddling the serene Mirror Lake, hiking mountain trails and riding the Cloudsplitter Gondola, a 15-minute ride up to the top of Whiteface Mountain. Lake Placid is also a great destination to experience the breathtaking Adirondack fall foliage and crisp mountain air.
Our LiTRV concierge specialist can check availability at nearby RV parks, such as the Lake Placid/Whiteface Mountain KOA Holiday park or Spacious Skies Adirondacks Peaks in North Hudson, about an hour from Lake Placid. We can also check availability at luxury resorts, such as the Mirror Lake Inn Resort and Spa. Our LiTRV private driver can drop you off and pick you up when you are ready to continue your journey.
