Where and When to See Spectacular Wildflowers on Your Luxury Vacation
Texas Hill Country, Texas
Best Time to Visit: Mid-March to Early April
The Texas Hill Country is a geographic region of Central and South Texas, forming the southeast part of the Edwards Plateau. The countryside boasts an estimated 5,000 varieties of wildflowers, including bluebonnets, violet winecups, yellow square-bud primroses, pink Indian blankets, and Mexican Hat flowers.
Relax and take in the beauty as our LiTRV private driver takes you on a scenic drive along Highway 16 or brings you to the Lady Bird Johnson Wildflower Center in Austin for an immersive wildflower experience. Willow City Loop, just outside Fredericksburg, is another must-visit spot where you can marvel at vibrant blooms amidst rolling hills.
You may also want to combine your wildflower viewing with an exciting cave adventure. Hidden beneath the picturesque rolling landscape of the Texas Hill Country are thousands of caves and caverns. Known as the state’s “show caves,” these caves and caverns are equipped with walkways and dramatic lighting to help show off their most breathtaking features.
Our LiTRV team can also make reservations at a nearby luxury RV resort, such as Buckhorn Lake Resort in Kerrville, Texas. The pet-friendly resort features a clubhouse with a pool, spa and fitness center, putting green and pickleball courts and easy access to wildflower hotspots.
Anza-Borrego Desert State Park, California
Best Time to Visit: Late February to Mid-March
The Anza-Borrego Desert State Park is the largest state park in California and is known for its vast landscape and diverse wildlife. Located about 90 minutes east of San Diego, the park features washes, wildflowers, palm groves, cacti and sweeping vistas. It is home to the Peninsular Bighorn Sheep, roadrunners, desert cottontails, black-tailed jackrabbits, Gambel’s Quail, and a variety of reptiles.
With 92 different plant families and hundreds of flowering species, the park is renowned for its captivating super blooms. During your trip, you can also refer to the park’s interactive map to help you navigate the best views. From desert sunflowers, sand verbena and Dune Evening Primrose to desert lilies, gold poppies, and brittle bush, you’ll be mesmerized by a kaleidoscope of wildflowers following winter rains.
During your visit, allocate some time to explore the quaint town of Borrego Springs, which is the only California town that is completely surrounded by a state park. It is also an official International Dark Sky Community—the first and only one in California—dedicated to protecting the night sky from light pollution. Borrego Springs also offers 300 days of sunshine a year.
Our LiTRV team can also assist with making reservations at nearby luxury RV resorts, such as The Springs at Borrego RV Resort in Borrego Springs. The pet-friendly resort provides spacious motorcoach sites, top-notch amenities and recreational activities, including an on-site golf course, mineral baths, and a resort-style pool and spa.
Columbia River Gorge, Oregon-Washington
Best Time to Visit: Late April to May
Biological diversity is a hallmark of the Columbia River Gorge, which encompasses two natural transitions in its 80-mile length that stretches along the Oregon-Washington border. The Gorge rises in altitude, and its tallest ridgelines exceed 4,000 feet above sea level. There is also a dramatic transition as you travel east to west, moving from arid, near-desert conditions to near-rain-forest conditions in the western Gorge. In the late spring, you’ll find a whirlwind of more than 800 species of wildflowers. Fifteen of these are endemic and are not found anywhere else in the world. From purple lupines, yellow balsamroots and to colorful lilies, orchids and golden Western Buttercups, the Columbia River Gorge is a springtime haven for wildflower enthusiasts.
Before or during your trip, track where you can see the best blooms through the Northwest Wildflowers Map. There are plenty of hiking trails where you can view the striking contrast of colorful flower blooms against the gorge’s dramatic cliffs and waterfalls.
Part of the fun is branching off the main highway and discovering narrow, winding roads and paths within the Gorge. The good news is that, in addition to the large luxury motorcoach, our LiTRV team can support a variety of smaller options. Whether it’s a chauffeured luxury SUV to take your entire group or family, or a few rugged e-bikes for the more adventurous, you can explore parts of the Gorge that are hard to reach.
Our LiTRV team can also explore availability at nearby RV resorts, such as the Lewis & Clark Campground & RV Park in North Bonneville, Washington. Located in the southwestern region of the Columbia River Gorge, the pet-friendly resort features babbling brooks, cascading falls, and beautiful views of the Gorge. The resort is located close to the town of Carson, which features the Carson Hot Springs Spa, the Elk Ridge Golf Course, and local breweries and restaurants.
No matter where you view wildflowers, it’s always a good idea to be prepared for changing weather conditions. Wear comfortable hiking shoes and stay on marked trails to preserve the blooms for future visitors. And while it may be tempting to pick the flowers, you can be fined for doing so in some national parks. Some wildflower hotspots get crowded with other tourists, so be patient or choose to visit during off-peak hours and days, such as during the week instead of a weekend.
Spring is around the corner, and now is the perfect time to plan to see splendid spring wildflowers as you travel in style and comfort.
